Verbs + Gerund
A number of verbs take the gerund, or 'ing' form when directly following another verb. Unfortunately, there are no rules as to which verbs take the infinitive and which verbs take the 'ing' or gerund form. Here is a list of common verbs which are always followed by the gerund, or 'ing' form.
Common Verbs + 'ing'
admit
deny
appreciate
can't help
can't stand
consider
delay
deny
detest
dislike
enjoy
escape
excuse
face
feel like
finish
forgive
give up
imagine
involve
mention
mind
miss
postpone
put off
resent
risk
suggest
understand
Example:
Bob Dobbes loves checking his email every few minutes.
I enjoy living most of my life online.
Adverb + 'ing'
Any verb following an adverb takes the 'ing' form.
Example:
"Slowly hanging up the phone, he turned down the solicitor's offer for a faster broadband connection."
"Slowly looking over the scanner, he hesitated to turn the device on."
