Prepositions of Place, Similarity and Function
Use 'in' with countries, cities, towns and regions.
Example:
The regulatory agency is in downtown Portland.
After World War Two the punishment for collaboration in France was severe.
Use 'at' for place in a city, town or village.
Example:
We'll go over the research process at the university.
The Community-Based Learning Initiative starts at school.
Like and As
Use 'like' as a preposition to express that two are objects are similar in some characteristic.
Example:
That natural resource smells like rotten eggs.
This scholarship is like the Michener scholarship.
Use 'as' to express the function that a person takes in an organization.
Example:
Tom is employed as the director of the Community Health and Rural Development Society of Crawford.
Margaret works as a lab scientist engaging in scientific evaluation.
