Verbs + Gerund
A number of verbs take the gerund, or 'ing' form when directly following another verb. Unfortunately, there are no rules as to which verbs take the infinitive and which verbs take the 'ing' or gerund form. Here is a list of common verbs which are always followed by the gerund, or 'ing' form.
Common Verbs + 'ing'
Phil loves watching the art of negotiation being applied.
Jason detests discussing ethnic cleansing campaigns over and over again.
Adverb + 'ing'
Any verb following an adverb takes the 'ing' form.
Immediately remembering his charitable deduction, he finished his taxes."
Quickly denying responsibility, they launched a series of public relations campaigns."
