Use of Some and Any

Some

'Some' is used with count and noncount nouns in positive
sentences.

Example:

There is some reason to believe a computer-designed surrogate would be even more efficient.

There is some mustard on the manufacturing cost report.

There are some in the manufacturing industry who love chocolate.

There are some manufacturing expenses which are never recorded on the books.

Any

Use 'any' with both count and noncount nouns in negative
sentences.

Example:

There isn't any food or consumer goods left on the shelves.

There aren't any consumer packaged goods that don't rely on cellophane and wax drippings to seal everything tight.

Use 'any' with both count and noncount nouns in questions.

Example:

Is there any book in our library that explains how to reduce manufacturing time?

Are there any tricks to learn before transitioning into mass production?

Compound Words with 'Any' and 'Some'

Many compound nouns are constructed with 'any' and 'some'

somebody -- anybody
someone -- anyone
something -- anything
somewhere -- anywhere

Use the same rules as 'any' and 'some' with these compound nouns. Use compound nouns with 'any-' in negative sentences and questions. Use compounds nouns with 'some-' in positive sentences.

Example:

Is there anybody who doesn't love a good defect occasionally?

Jack wants somebody else to drive the motorized pallet truck.

There is nowhere to go to find better costing methods.

Jack wants to work somewhere in Indonesia or in a contract warehouse.

NOTE: 'somebody - someone' and 'anybody - anyone' are synonymous and can be used interchangeably.
